Purity: It Starts In The Mind

What do you think of when you think of the word PURITY?

I’m sure the first thought that came to mind was NO SEX.

But what if I told you that purity isn’t just about not having sex or saving your self for marriage. Would you believe me?

Well it’s true.

You can not have sex and still not be pure.

That’s because purity starts from the inside out. It’s a mindset.

Take this time to self check- how’s your mindset? Do you often think impure thoughts? Do have thoughts that are destructive to who God is calling you to be? Thoughts of jealousy or envy?

The bible tells us in Matthew 5:

You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery’, but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Purity, for the Christian, would be avoiding anything that is not of God or anything that doesn’t bring honor to God.

Which is why we must check our thoughts. If Matthew 5 tells us that if we even look at someone in a lustful way that we have already committed a sin, then surely it applies to the things we think on.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he [in behavior]. Proverbs 23:7

The problem for many of us is we can’t control our thoughts. Many times what we see or hear can send our mind into a spiral of thoughts. Whether we would like to admit or not. However, you don’t want to allow your mind to stay there- you must combat those thoughts and think on things that are pure. I call it the change your thought process, it’s the same as  change the subject. You know how it is, when you don’t want to have a conversation, you just change the subject. Well that too can work for when you’re having impure thoughts, just change the thought. Start thinking about things that please God and things that will bring Him honor.

I mean honestly, I get embarrassed. I’m like OMG my Father just caught me thinking about something I shouldn’t. I immediately change the thought.

Listen, I don’t know about you but having impure thoughts and thinking about Jesus just doesn’t mix.

Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]. Philippians 4

If we don’t get our thoughts under control, that spiritual radar you have that keeps you from not having sex will soon fail you. Because eventually if you think it’s okay to think about things that are unpleasing to God, then soon enough you’ll think it’s okay to go all the way and have sex.

Most of the things we do- OR DON’T DO- start with a thought. Which is why the bible puts so much effaces on having pure thoughts.

Before I go I just want to give you a few practical tips on what you can do to keep your thoughts pure.

  1. Remember that God knows your thoughts. It’s not enough to not have sex, or act out on our jealousy and envious feelings, we also don’t want to entertain the thought of it. Change what you’re thinking about.
  2. Block your eye gates from things that may tempt you into thinking things that are unpleasing to God. i.e social media, television, other people
  3. Intentionally fight impure thoughts. The best weapon of choice is the word of God.
